A family who lives in a tract home enjoyed entertaining outdoors, but they were limited by the weather and uneven pavers that made the space uncomfortable. The remodeled design mirrors their active lifestyle and encompasses an outdoor kitchen, living area, dining space and upstairs deck just off their master suite. A spiral staircase provides access from the master suite to a patio down below.
The Spanish-inspired additions take full advantage of 180-degree ocean views. Stained open beams in the dining area help create depth, and two fireplaces and a few outdoor heaters bring extra comfort to the outdoor space. The pool equipment and plumbing lines, which ran underneath the proposed additions, presented one of the bigger challenges and had to be relocated satisfactorily.

After building a brand new, modern house, the homeowners sought to update their outdoor spaces to better match and blend with the new home. The goal was to bring a master-planned concept to the backyard, including renovating the existing swimming pool; organizing a new decking layout; tearing down the old pool house; and designing a new covered pool cabana with an outdoor kitchen, living area, dining area, guest room and full bathroom. Challenges arose during the project’s construction phase, particularly in terms of moving materials and equipment into the backyard.
Obstacles along the side of the house meant materials and equipment had to be moved through a 4-foot-wide access point. Heavy foot traffic due to the number of trips made necessitate the building of a temporary chip-board “highway” to handle all the movement. Work hours and noise levels also had to be carefully coordinated around the needs of a family with a newborn.

The owner wanted an outdoor living area to accommodate large family gatherings, so he bought the corner lot next door and demolished the small house on that property. In conjunction with a new swimming pool, the client sought an outdoor kitchen, two fire features, a covered space for entertaining guests, an area that would function as a pool cabana, and a carport for two vehicles.
Most of the concrete is finished in travertine tile, which also provides a seamless transition from the new pool to the outdoor living space. The large hip roof has a vaulted ceiling with a “smoky bourbon” colored tongue and groove trimmed out with cedar finishes on the ceiling, beams and columns. The kitchen, arched walls and fire features contain two complementary veneer stones. | QR
