Travel often influences design choices, and that was true in this master bath remodel done by Sarah Kraus of S&W Kitchens. The client wanted the bath to have a distinctively Asian flair so it could work as a backdrop for collectibles and furnishings gathered from travel and time lived overseas.

The downtown Orlando, FL-based mini-penthouse condo posed a number of challenges for the designer. Limits existed on what could be removed or relocated because it was situated on the 22nd floor of a commercial building. The vanity wall was fire rated, so the wall had to be built out to accommodate the recessed Robern medicine cabinets the client requested. The space also needed to be updated to include some Universal Design elements to meet the client’s needs.

Once walls and a curved soffit over the tub were removed, the room felt more spacious. While a walk-in shower was requested, the limitations of being on the 22nd floor meant including curb at minimal height, with a linear drain at the existing drain location. To make it feel more like a walk-in space, Kraus eliminated the glass door at the entrance of the shower. The shower and pony wall are finished in Contempo Grey & Graphite 12″x24″ tiles from Happy Floors, with a shower floor and wall inset in Daltile Black River Pebble and floor in Daltile Saddlebrook Oak. The shower includes wall jets, a rain head and hand-held slide bar for a luxury experience.

The Walnut vanity from Omega Cabinetry is finished in Smokey Hills Gray Cabinet Stain, with Asian-inspired cabinet pulls. A Cambria black quartz countertop is paired with chrome faucets from Delta Faucet and rustic sinks from Native Trails. Maxim Asiana 3-light fixtures provide an added Asian-inspired detail.

While the wish list for this small master bath wasn’t unusual, fulfilling the client’s desires required thinking a little outside the box for designer Kimberley Harrison of Kimberley Harrison Interiors. The client wanted more space, double sinks, a separate shower and a soaking tub, all in a bright, contemporary style.

A small closet in the adjoining master bedroom was removed to allow for the shower. Baltera shower components from ROHL provide a luxury shower experience. Soft, bright neutrals were carried into the space through the use of Walker Zanger tiles in Café Milk. To provide a bright contrast, Greystoke 1″ Hexagon tiles from New Ravenna are situated on the shower floor and ceiling.

Directly across the room, the Coastal Serin freestanding soaking tub and contemporary faucet from American Standard was placed beneath an enlarged window, which bathes the space in natural light. The wall behind the tub features floor-to-ceiling Coconut Matte Marquis Octagon white tile from Walker Zanger’s Studio Moderne collection. The dimensional tile enhances the contemporary look of the space, and the natural light from the window and small chandelier reflects off the white tile, adding extra brightness to the room.

Along with a DXV Lyndon toilet, centered between the shower and tub is a Herringbone Double Vanity from Restoration Hardware. The grayed wood and herringbone design complement the classic grey and white marble hexagon floor tile, while round mirrors above soften the angles of the vanity and Stefan Sconces from Arteriors. A chrome finish to add brightness was used on the ROHL Lombardia widespread faucet and WS decorative hardware. Coordinating with the vanity is a linen cabinet that provides additional storage.

Feminine Touches

Beginning a new chapter in her life, the recently widowed client of Jen Davison of Collins & DuPont Design Group was looking for a master bath that would be feminine and pretty, light and bright. The designer started from scratch in this 152-sq.-ft. space, stripping the bath of its plumbing, tile, vanities and lighting.

The desire for both a freestanding tub and a shower with a bench seat dictated part of the design plan, with the Victoria + Albert tub with graceful wave detail and Kallista Script tub faucet acting as the focal point. The shower’s clean glass enclosure showcases the exquisite tile work, which includes Ruben Sorhegui Tile in White Calacatta Marble and Dance Pattern, a waterjet mosaic in a traditional damask pattern that plays off the curve of the tub. A Kallista showerhead and hand shower complement the tub filler.

A coordinating vanity and dressing table in a creamy white finish and transitional design from Busby Cabinets were placed on opposite walls. The curves of the space continue in the Kallista Script faucet and accessories in chrome to add bling, paired with a white Kallista sink and Super White Sumati countertop from UMI Stone. A bidet was added to the water closet, which features a Kallista toilet.

Crystal elements provide a final touch, and include lighting by Visual Comfort and crystal hardware from Emtek. Even the wallpaper features tiny glass beads in a tone-on-tone polka-dot pattern, adding a little extra sparkle to the room.
