The usual blend of form and function, Cheever used a a palette of natural colors to offset the force of the black appliances, including using wood and wood veneers.

Another beautiful morning at McCormick Place! The show is winding down, but there’s still plenty to do and see!

Couple of things of note:

Twitter Twits: If you’re not checking out the tweets with the hashtag #KBIS and #KBIS2010, you totally should be! The chatter will give you some great ideas about what’s happening over here or, if you’re here, some neat things to check out.

Awesome trend: Bidets. You read that correctly. If you’ve followed these pages closely, you know your loyal M.E. is into this Euro-centric trend and has been waiting patiently for advanced and sensible hygiene to reach the U.S. mainstream. Well, it looks like my wait might be over, for this is the Year of the Bidet at KBIS. Coway’s got ‘em, Kohler’s got ‘em and, of course, TOTO’s got ‘em. And @CowayUSA has a presentation that is hilarious and informative.

New finishes are everywhere; I’ve seen a ton of oil-rubbed bronze and some new distressed takes on that finish. Lots and lots of matte whites and matte blacks from companies like Webert which is displaying for the first time at KBIS; Webert is the exclusive US partner of Elkay. The same holds true for hardware; Atlas Homewares has a full collection of sleek transitional hardware in matte white; something Adrienne Morea, president and designer of the Atlas lines said was done to avoid the white hardware from having a “plasticky” look to them.

Green. It’s not a trend, it’s the direction of the industry, and you’ll find the mission stated at every booth in some way. From new, Tier 3 EnergyStar appliances to showerheads which meet the new WaterSense standards for showers, to WAC lighting’s net zero energy factory in China: companies want you to know what they’re doing to help.

This show ushers in a new era of Tweeting for Kitchen & Bath Sustainable; come follow me @KBDNSustainable.

Now to return to New York and finish up our stellar May issue; more post-show news is forthcoming later this week. Hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage–leave your thoughts in the comments!

Greetings from your overly enthusiastic Managing Editor! It’s early in the day here at the show, but here’s a few highlights!

Spotted cameras taping at Fisher & Paykel. . . there have been a number of chef demonstrations over there, so if you’re in the north hall, I recommend doing a drive-by to see what the hub-bub’s about and maybe get yourself a cheeseburger!

David Kohler’s State of the Industry address is happening in fifteen minutes. More on that to come!

I sat in on Thomas Shuler’s innovation talk at the NKBA main stage; Shuler’s the president of DuPont Building Innovations and he’s all about new ways of thinking about how you interact with your customer. Look for more on that later today.

Lots of people are smiling; the show’s got a positive vibe and both visitors and exhibitors are reporting lots of interest and plenty of traffic.

I don’t want to make you feel bad if you’re not here, but. . . what a show you’re missing!

Here’s a quick rundown of some cool stuff I’ve seen in and around the halls (you’ll be able to find more in the form of podcasts from the show on KBDN Radio here):

People! They’re everywhere! If you were at KBIS 2009, you know that people were. . . um. . . kind of lacking from last year’s event. Not at all the case. One manufacturer rep told me, off the record and regarding KBIS versus IBS: “Maybe the whole building industry isn’t on the mend just yet, but our segment might be.” In a less relevant example: there are lines for everything, including a line at the McCormick Starbucks that never seems to get any shorter whenever I happen to pass it!

Neat Product Alert! BreezeDry: a neat product. If you’ve got a client who agonizes over the environmental impact of their laundering activities, this product might be the answer. 90% more energy efficient (that’s not a typo) than an average clothes dryer. Visit the site; it’s pretty neat.

Ellen Cheever’s kitchen for the Jenn-Air booth. Everybody’s favorite pillar of the kitchen and bath industry designed a display kitchen for the Jenn-Air booth using their Black Floating Glass and Euro Style Products. She rounded it out with products from Scavolini, DuPont Corian & Zodiac countertops, Elkay sinks and more! Photos to come!

Atlas Homewares has designed a faucet! Altmans Products in California is producing the 1930s, Art Deco-reminiscent faucet, which is available in five finishes.

Newcomers have taken the plunge! Zuvo Water Filtration Systems is, as the founder of the company Andy Butler described it to me, “A typical Silicon Valley start-up, except we don’t make computers.” The company makes a total water treatment system, and has a focus on ethical business practices; 5% of its profits are donated to programs which work to bring water filtration to places in the third world that have no access to potable water.

That’s the news from McCormick Place, beside blue Lake Michigan, where all the kitchen and bath insiders will be tired tonight! More to come.

In this episode of “Questions You Never Thought You’d Ask,” we ask ourselves: Is it a sink? Is it a toilet?

If you were at K/BIS in Chicago last year, you might have seen me standing in at the Caroma booth in front of this, mesmerized.

I had been working on several green stories and was a few weeks away from launching this blog, and the topic I had become most interested in was the use of “used” water or greywater as a means to overall water conservation.

And then along comes the Profile Smart, the unit you see at left–it wasn’t available in the U.S. during K/BIS Chicago, but it is now. The unit is a dual flush HET with a 1.28/.08 gpf rating, which the company says will save a family that replaces a 1.6 gpf model approximately 5,000 gallons of water a year.

In the lingo of infomercials everywhere: BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!

The water saving increase when you factor in the sink that is integrated into the lid of the toilet. In Caroma’s words:

“When the Profile Smart is flushed, fresh cold water is directed through the faucet for hand washing. This water then drains into the tank to be used for the next flush. This unique water and space saving design features chrome buttons built-in to the tapware design. It also features a large trapway, nearly double the industry average, virtually eliminating blockages and overflows. The installation process is quick and easy and does not require any special instructions.”

Now that’s an innovation–for the environmentalists, it means no more DIYgreywater lines from the sink to the toilet to outside gardens/ponds/etc. (illegal in some states, unregulated in others). For the average user, though, it means yet another way to save water–good for the bills, good for the Earth.

Moen’s IO Digital shower system is making waves–pun very much intended–and was all the buzz at the company’s media event last night. Two great features include a “pause” function for those times when you’re in the shower (women: think when you’re shaving your legs) and you need to temporarily halt the stream–which has a convenience benefit coupled with a definite water-savings benefit. This is also good if you’re the type to check your Blackberry while showering, too. The unit also has a funky little remote control. You can set it to your favorite temperature then, in the morning, reach for the remote to turn on the shower before you even get out of bed, and the unit will tell you when the water’s at your preferred temperature so you can hop right in.

Brizo’s making a bold, green statement with their “Green Is Beautiful” campaign: the company is touting its WaterSense compliance as well as its Diamond Seal Technology which acts to maintain the quality of the water that passes through the faucetry that contains it, and is tested to last, according to Brizo, to five million uses, or ten times the industry standard. Brizo has also gone transparent with its environmentally sensitive processes including water recycling, brass recycling, chemical-free metal cleaning and other neat green features. For more, click here to go to Brizo’s Web site.

Photos and other news to come! Stay tuned!

For months there’s been speculation that this year’s K/BIS was going to pale in comparison with shows in years passed. Rumors dispelled! It may not be the heyday of a few years ago, but the showfloors are populated, booths are crowded and reps are wheelin’ and dealin’.

Former Governor Mike Huckabee spoke to that very point at the opening keynote address this morning when he said, “No recession lasts forever,” and current NKBA president Suzie Williford agreed, thanking those in attendance (a near-capacity crowd in the GWCC’s auditorium) for having “the courage to invest in the industry and in your business’ future.”

OK, OK, enough cheerleading. Here’s the skinny on the good, green products which are (happily) everywhere.
