Green Makeover: Solar, Plumbers and Showerheads

Adelphi Kitchens & Cabinetry has undergone a green makeover; the company has installed a solar roof on its 160,000 square-foot facility. Officials at the company say the effort is part of an overall push for alternative energy solutions at Adelphi. More after the jump.

It, in this case, is an Apple iPad and it did in fact just give one away to designer Nathan Bush at NeoCon this year. After running a promotion in which GREENGUARD invited social mediaphiles to Tweet about NeoCon (dubbing it the NeoConTWEST–hardy har har).

“Nathan Bush, 22, a recent graduate of the University of Louisville with a bachelor’s degree in Interior Architecture, was the first contestant to photograph the showrooms of over 75 manufacturers of GREENGUARD Certified products and share those photographs on the popular microblogging site Twitter.”

Jim Malone fell in love with reclaimed wood from bowling alley lanes and began turning it into practical pieces for the home. With two style lines and a variety of wood species and finishes, Malone makes tables, countertops and accessories such as wine racks. Check it out here.

Neat Product Alert: Fireclay Tile

I’m back from my week-long break and ready to talk tile. Ready?

Fireclay tile makes a recycled content tile that’s pretty cool.

The company’s Debris series contains 60% recycled content and is available in 112 glaze colors. According to Fireclay’s website the content is harvested “in the form of curbside waste glass, and we also incorporate local Bay Area waste granite dust and used sandblasting abrasives.”

Habitat for Humanity has built a LEED Platinum prototype–could the charitable organization be making an historic shift toward green?

From GreenSource magazine:

“Among the home’s “ultra-sustainable” attributes are super-insulated exterior walls, a high-efficiency HVAC system, a solar-powered hot water system, low-flow plumbing fixtures, low-VOC paints, carpeting, and adhesives, and kitchen cabinets that were constructed by local high school students using reclaimed materials. Solatube skylights, along with strategically placed windows, bring daylight to the home’s interior, drastically reducing the need for electric lighting during the day. Outdoors, the light-colored concrete roof tiles help reflect the desert heat while harvested rainwater irrigates the fruit trees and vegetable garden that lie amid a landscape of drought-tolerant plants.”

MA Town Bans Bottled Water, and Other Green Miscellany

TreeHugger is reporting that Concord, MA plans to become the first town in America to ban bottled water.

SOLON wins KBCulture Award

Just received this piece of news on Blanco’s Solon in-counter composting system, and just needed to share, because composting is exactly that exciting!

Solon has won an honorable mention in the 2010 KBCULTURE Awards in the storage category.

“With several municipalities, including San Francisco, now requiring to compost organic kitchen waste, the SOLON is a timely - and especially considering its function - an unexpectedly elegant product,” says Leslie Plummer Clagett, founder and judge of KBCULTURE.
