Before
Located in an older home set in a prestigious Tucson, AZ neighborhood, this builder-grade kitchen desperately needed an update. The challenge, however, was that it would be impossible to move or remove any walls to change the footprint of the space. The homeowners craved a modernized space that would inspire them and provide them with a sense of wellbeing. Lori Carroll, with co-designer Debra Gelety, of Lori Carroll & Associates, tackled the challenging remodel.

After
Pre-remodel, the kitchen featured all the hallmarks of its era: whitewashed wood ceiling, golden oak flooring, granite countertops and bulky stainless-steel appliances. A decision was made to keep the architectural detail of the wood ceiling and refinish the floor in a more modern, natural tone, while the lion’s share of the investment went into custom cabinetry with flat panel doors and sleek hardware. Adding 22″ to the cabinet height optimized the space to provide plenty of much-needed storage. Textured glass on awning lift cabinets and in-cabinet LED lighting provide further modern touches.

Layers of ambient, task and accent lighting create a sense of openness in the room. Combined with new, professional-grade Sub-Zero/Wolf appliances, the lighting plan brings the space into the 21st century both in terms of form and function.
