Kitchens Under $100,000 – KBDA 2017 Gold Winner
Sandra Diaz-Velasco, EOLO A&I Design, Inc., Miami, FL
This 1970s-era Miami, FL condo, with breathtaking views of Biscayne Bay, got a decidedly masculine and modern overhaul to meet the needs of a young bachelor who likes to entertain. When Sandra Diaz-Velasco of EOLO A&I Design, Inc. in Miami decided to change the location of the kitchen from a too-small space located close to the home’s entry, she had to deal with a structural column in the center of the room.
The new kitchen area worked well for entertaining as it was now open to the living area, and the goal was to make the room stylish but not allow it to distract from the rest of the space. Each of the elements were designed to resemble regular furniture, including the custom entertainment center piece that integrated the awkwardly placed structural column.
Black, white and shades of gray dominate the entire living area, with pale wood tones adding a lighter touch. Black natural stone is featured on multiple surfaces, including the shelving, hood range with Faber Inca Smart Hood Insert and the island insert with Wolf cooktop. The rest of the island features an antique marble slab of Paradiso White sitting on black squared supports.
Opposite the island, custom cabinetry from Sanandres Construction in a pale wood tone lines the wall. Featured here are the integrated Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer units, as well as the integrated Asko dishwasher. A Dax single bowl undermount stainless sink is paired with the STO High Arc pull-down faucet from Moen in matte black, surrounded by a countertop/backsplash combination of Caesarstone quartz in Sleek Concrete.
A Wolf E series single oven and microwave drawer are featured in the kitchen, which also includes a pocket wall that closes off the pantry and laundry area. Ceniza Matte natural stone flooring and a custom floating light fixture from Union Lighting add just the right balance to the space.
