Specialty Project – KBDA 2017 Bronze Winner

Command Center

Carrie Gallo, Ember & Brune, Montgomery, IL

When designer Carrie Gallo was approached to rethink a client’s cluttered, “catch all” bedroom/office – a room with an identity crisis – she proposed a bold new space that would use specialized storage to function as a multipurpose laundry room/home office/craft room/homework center/cleaning equipment storage space.

By removing a closet area, the designer was able to use every square foot of space to add order, purpose and beauty. One of the challenges of the project was finding balance – balance between open storage and practical storage space, between materials with durability and easy maintenance, and between his and her tastes.

The countertop – salvaged pine from a local 130-year-old home – required six coats of stain and topcoat, but it adds both aesthetic appeal and practicality. Outlets were added along the countertop and inside the cubbies for phone and tablet charging, and can lights were installed to illuminate the work surface.

The room also got a storage overhaul, with open corner shelving, two specialized tall cabinets for cleaning supplies, file storage, a trash roll-out, pull-out storage and individual “in-box” cubbies and laundry basket storage for each family member.
