The bathroom takes advantage of existing site conditions by burrowing into the terrain to achieve privacy on a greatly exposed site. A long stone retaining wall holds back the earth to form the shower on the interior, and a private sitting terrace on the exterior. The focal point of the room is a curvilinear glass tile wall that separates the shower and the dry space, and anchors one end of back-to-back floating vanities. At the other end, an art wall greets the bather on a daily basis. These elements combine to form a “walkaround” piece that defines the spatial characteristics of the room, and makes a small space appear larger. A bank of utilitarian services provides further privacy on the public side of the bath.
