Luxury, comfort and elegance were the buzzwords associated with the planning of this Long Island, NY master bathroom, designed by Lung-Shan Chang of Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly, Inc. While a clean and classic look was desired for the 300-sq.-ft. space, the clients also wanted something that was artistic and unique.
Playing on the artistic idea, the shower wall, in itself, is a work of art, and acts as a focal point in the space. A full-wall lotus mosaic, created using custom tiles, required advance planning, meticulous attention to detail and long labor hours to get it just right. The vivid greens, oranges and yellows present a striking contrast to the all-white shower and surrounding room.
A frameless glass shower enclosure shows the tilework in its best light. In the shower, which has amenities for two people, Kohler products include Purist showerheads and WaterTile Body Sprays. A long bench with handsprays at each side add comfort and convenience for the bather. Custom waterjet cut marble tiles are laid on the shower floor and ceiling to enhance the opulence of the space.
The shower is flanked by two water closets, each sporting a Kohler Veil toilet. Directly across the room stands a Kohler Purist drop-in spa tub with Purist faucet, set in a domed wall space with windows that provide a view of the outdoors. Surrounding the tub is custom paneling designed to complement the vanities located on each side wall.
The identical custom white vanities, in addition to ample prep space and storage, feature oversized mirrors, Gliderite Clear Acrylic Handles, translucent vanity legs and upper and lower doors with leather inserts. Set in the Cambria Brittanicca quartz marble-look countertop is a Kohler undermount sink with Purist faucet.
Custom waterjet cut marble floor tiles and a crystal chandelier enhance the classic, elegant design.

Suite Story
Libby Palmieri, House of L, Solon, OH

This Ohio master suite – at over 700 square feet – had size in its favor, but the wish list of the clients was long and detailed. Items on the check list for designer Libby Palmieri of House of L included adding a second closet to create his and hers closets, and incorporating a wet bar and gas fireplace.
In order to create the second closet, square footage was stolen from the large bedroom. The added closet also provided a wall for the fireplace. Because the old closet now only had to accommodate one person, space was taken from it and reallocated to the bath, allowing for the incorporation of a wet bar and a large, luxurious shower.
The shower, designed in soft blues and whites, adds a picturesque punch to the space, showcasing Stellar 4″x8″ tiles in Cornflower Blue Gloss with 3″x6″ Victorian Mantle on the lower portion and throughout the room, and Stellar 3″x6″ tiles in Pure White on the upper wall of the shower, both from Sonoma Tilemakers. A waterfall effect was created on the bench and floor of the shower using Mist Mosaic tile from New Ravenna in Bardiglio, Carrara and Thassos marbles. To enhance the luxury shower experience, Palmieri included hand shower, body sprays and trims from California Faucets, as well as a 16″ Flush Mount Rain Machine from Jaclo and SM Series Steambath from Steamist.
A dressing furniture-style vanity along one wall mirrors the functional version placed in front of the large window, both custom pieces from C.A. Miller Custom Woodworking. Suspended, back-lit mirrors were hung in front of the window, which allowed the designer to play with the restrictive layout of the space. The vanities are topped with Minuet quartz from LG Hausys, with Kohler Verticyl sinks and Miramar 8″ widespread lavatory faucets in the window vanity. Coordinating decorative accessories are also from California Faucets’ Miramar collection, and a TOTO Eco Soiree with Washlet is tucked into a water closet.
Artistic Tile’s Honed Carrara Marble graces the floor, punctuated by a center of Lillet Waterjet tiles in Carrara and Calacatta from New Ravenna.

High-Rise Home
Colette Rodon Hornof, Vesta, Chicago, IL

High style in a high rise was the objective for this project, designed by Colette Rodon Hornof of Vesta. The 900-sq.-ft. master suite makeover was designed to make the most of the space and its stunning views of the city of Chicago.
The original space consisted of two awkward his-and-hers bathrooms and closets, and the task at hand was to convert that space into a serene, spa-like bath and upscale walk-in closet. The area posed several challenges for Hornof, including incorporating a new tub and larger shower into an existing bathroom layout, and providing an open feel in the bath of a high-rise building while still allowing for privacy.
The original west side bathroom was used as the base for the new bath. A step up into the room was added to allow for the relocation of most of the plumbing needs. The new Aquia II toilet from TOTO was placed in the toilet’s original location, with a tall cabinet added to visually close it off from the rest of the space.
Using the drain and water lines from the original tub and shower allowed for a sleek double-sink design, with a Leicht Avance European white channel handle vanity. The vanity is topped with a Diresco Anticato in Pure White, with Duravit Starck III sinks and Dornbracht IMO faucets. Dornbracht IMO bath accessories are also featured throughout the space. Robern M Series medicine cabinets provide lighting and additional storage and are set against a backdrop of Artistic Tile’s Opera Glass Collection of mosaics, which are also featured on the shower wall.
By raising the floor, the new shower was able to be located at the old closet location, with a tub as a feature at the window wall. A glass enclosure separates the two areas, with the Nouveau tub from Hastings Tile & Bath and Hansgrohe Axor Citterio tub faucet placed at the window to take advantage of the stunning view. The shower features a plumbing column that includes the Dornbracht showerhead and faucet. Modern Avorio tile on the tub/shower wall finishes the look.
