For years, friends gently nudged Bonnie Lewis, Allied ASID, CAPS, principal of 55+ TLC Interior Design, LLC, in Scottsdale, AZ, to become an interior designer, despite the fact that she was enjoying a long, successful career as a marketing communications manager with Fortune 100 companies. Ten years ago, she took the plunge and earned an interior design degree.
Realizing that helping seniors through design was her passion, Lewis founded her own company specializing in residential aging–in-place remodel design, Universal Design, dementia-supportive design, and commercial senior living and healthcare design. In just over six years, she has earned 32 international, national and regional design excellence awards from the National Kitchen & Bath Association, the National Association of Home Builders, the American Society of Interior Designers, the Chrysalis Awards, Kitchen & Bath Design News, Qualified Remodeler, CID Coverings Installation and Design Awards, and HGTV People’s Choice Awards. Her work is also featured in Taunton’s New Bathroom Idea Book.
The designer’s stance is to crush the norm of institutional-looking, ugly bathrooms for older adults, instead making Aging in Place remodel design projects as beautiful as they are safe. To accomplish this, Lewis uses senior living design skills, space planning, adherence of ADA code, biophilic design, and color and finish selections to eliminate hazards and empower safer, independent living.
