This narrow 1960s galley kitchen was a poor fit for the clients, who love to cook and entertain. “The kitchen was more like the size of a small pantry and was never designed for a serious cook,” says designer Susan Brisk, CKD, CAPS, CLIPPS, NCIDQ, of Euro- Plus Design. ”It lacked storage, counter space and floor space to safely allow even two people to work in the kitchen at the same time.” Her clients wanted to enjoy cooking with their grandchildren, but it was simply impossible to do so in the cramped space.

Brisk’s clients envisioned an “indoor playground” where their family and friends could comfortably gather and cook together, so creating more space was a necessity. An extension was built so that the dining room and family room could be moved, and the former dining room was incorporated into the kitchen. New work zones and an island with a raised seating area were added to create a safer and more convenient space for the clients and their family to cook and mingle. For the clients, a couple in their 70s, aging in place was also a point of concern. Brisk focused on creating efficient, convenient storage placement at a level that could be comfortably reached by users of any height. New windows were added to provide a lovely view of the surrounding woods and bathe the kitchen with natural light. Swirling track lighting, a Zephyr hood and a warm Glazzio tiled backsplash combine to create a playful yet sophisticated atmosphere.
