Kevin Mullen, president, Empire Kitchen and Bath, in Calgary, Alberta, is on a mission to change the way the industry builds cabinetry and homes. In 2013, after the historic floods in his city, he developed an acute chemical sensitivity, which had a profound effect on his life, including his ability to go to work at his facility. His personal journey back to health led him to question the products used in the construction of cabinetry and homes, as well as the potential effects on homeowners.
Mullen began to research the materials being used, what kinds of chemicals they contained, and how they impacted living and working environments. He tested many of the findings in his own home and ultimately in the construction of his new showroom facility, which was completed in 2017. This marked the start of his journey to create the RESIDE Healthy Standard.
In 2020, under his leadership, Empire Kitchen & Bath achieved GREENGUARD Gold Certification for its Avant Cabinets line (one of only a couple of manufacturers worldwide that have achieved certification for cabinetry) and GREENGUARD 3036 certification for its inaugural healthy home, making Empire the first in North America and only other manufacturer outside of Japan to achieve this certification.
