Grand Style
David Stimmel, Stimmel Consulting Group, Inc., Ambler, PA
While an addition was originally contemplated for this home in Villanova, PA, Dave Stimmel of Stimmel Consulting Group, Inc. in Ambler, PA was instead tasked with converting a dated 1980s family room into a grand kitchen. At 465 square feet, the room was large but needed to work for entertaining as well as function for a multi-generational family.
Upon entering the space, the high vaulted ceilings provide drama through the addition of aged repurposed barn wood and the uncovering of the original ceiling buttresses. The ceiling now plays off of the reused and reclaimed white oak on the floor.
An old green marble fireplace that once sat in the center of the room was converted into a wood-burning pizza oven that is now a focal point. The custom Demetrio Pizza Oven is surrounded by bricks reclaimed from Chicago homes, and it sits above a concrete “boulder” fashioned from recycled material. A copper-lined firewood bin and concealed pull-out storage are located below.
Flanking the sides of the pizza oven are cabinets for storage as well as an integrated 36″ refrigerator column and 30″ freezer column, both from Sub-Zero. To the left of the pizza oven is a short wall that includes a 30″ Steam Oven and 30″ Warming Drawer from Wolf.
The range wall showcases a 60″ BlueStar Pro range painted in a rich blue-gray tone, which offsets the creamy tones of the Cordoba Foliage with Turkistan Plain tile in Light Volcanic Ash and the Francois & Co. custom hood. The cabinetry here and along the pizza oven wall is in the same creamy white tone with a brushed glaze – custom made by Stimmel Design Group.
The island also features custom cabinetry from Stimmel in a contrasting rich wood grain, topped by a custom stone countertop. The island includes a 36″ Shaws Original Fireclay Farmhouse Sink from Rohl, as well as a 24″ Miele Futura Dimension dishwasher.
