This kitchen was part of a whole-house renovation that transformed a Cape Cod into a Shingle-style home. The owners sought a sophisticated farmhouse-style kitchen that fit into their rural setting in a historic valley in suburban New Jersey. The end result features tones of creamy yellow and peppercorn gray with clean lines, simple cabinet and drawer faces, contrasting granite countertops with simple edge treatments, well-placed appliances and sinks, energy-efficient layered lighting and adjoining seating and eating areas. To accommodate wide aisles and a large island, interior walls were removed and a new exterior wall built. Several rear rooflines were changed to allow for an 8-ft.-high ceiling. The design also was built so that the owners can age in place comfortably and ensure their special-needs teenager could live in the house as an adult, alongside other adults and a house manager.
