Tiny Space Becomes Expansive Kitchen

BEFORE
Although located in a spacious two-story split-level home, the existing kitchen measured just 276 square feet – hardly fitting for the 60-year-old upscale home – and was extremely outdated. The kitchen’s low ceilings and lack of windows created a dreary environment, and the age of the home lent itself to many hidden issues and decayed conditions. The client’s intention was to sell the home upon completion of the remodel, so the kitchen had to be designed with an eye toward resale.

AFTER
By incorporating an adjoining double carport space into the kitchen’s layout, David Griffin of Los Angeles-based Complete Access was able to create a spacious chef’s kitchen more than two times the size of the original. The island features bistro seating for six, while a connecting kitchen lounge and adjoining outdoor dining terrace provide additional space for entertaining. Thermador Pro appliances, a butler’s pantry and cabinets from Omega Cabinetry provide functionality and storage for passionate home chefs. In order to bring more light into the space, the kitchen entry was enlarged and dressed with etched-glass doors. New windows were added, along with floor-to-ceiling tri-fold doors, and an existing skylight was kept. Recessed task lighting throughout the space is accompanied by fully automated mood lighting, including Oggetti Italian glass pendants, a custom hand-blown glass Nebula pendant above the bistro seating area and a Fluxwerx l-beam spanning the island.
