MILAN, ITALY — As design aficionados from all over the world geared up for the kick off of EuroCucina and the concurrent International Bathroom Exhibition, based here, Kitchen & Bath Design News took an afternoon to check out some of the local color, visiting several Milan showrooms along with #KBInsiders Young Huh, Alberto Villalobos and Brian Patrick Flynn.
The group visited Minotti Cucine and Villeroy & Boch to look at what’s trending in European kitchen and bath design, and to get a preview of what was to come at EuroCucina, which opened this week.
At the Villeroy & Boch showroom, hot design trends on display included new colors in sinks and freestanding tubs, new materials in bathroom faucets and fixtures, and a variety of wood finishes on vanities.
“We’re seeing different metals, we’re seeing warm tones that are really making [the] bathroom into a jewel box,” said Villalobos, citing a vignette with a rose gold faucet. Huh was taken by the bright colors in sink vessels and tubs, including yellow, retro green, blue and pink, while Flynn took note of some interesting wood finishes seen on freestanding vanities.
At the Minotti Cucine showroom, the designers identified such key trends as more streamlined kitchens and a desire for a minimalist aesthetic with strong focal points.
“Over the past few years, I’ve seen a lot of my clients, especially my millennial clients, turn toward a more minimalist style interior. That’s where more specialized focal points in bathrooms and kitchens are coming into play,” expounded Flynn, citing an asymmetrical, stone sink that was on display.
Villalobos noted how the sleek lines evident at the Minotti showroom will allow for much easier collaboration between interior and kitchen design, while Huh was intrigued by the streamlined, masculine kitchens which seem to ‘disappear’ into a small space.
While the showroom tour was a great preview of what’s to come, things will only heat up as designers continue to descend on Milan for EuroCucina, the International Furniture Exhibition, which was launched in 1974, and which runs concurrent with the International Bathroom Exhibition in the broader context of the Salone del Mobile.
